Neglecting Children Today child neglect is the largest part of child abuse in the United States, and almost two-thirds of all reported cases in child protective services is neglect (Dubowitz). Before the 1970’s child abuse mostly referred to physical abuse; however, now it encompasses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as neglect (Compton’s). Physical abuse is when a child is hurt by getting hit, punched, kicked, or any other form of beating by an adult (Compton’s). This abuse will only harm the child physically and though it is horrific and can lead to long term effects it will normally only lead to violence. Emotional abuse is when an adult is hateful to the child by calling him names, and another form of emotional abuse†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"’ Child abuse and neglect is a serious public health problem which requires immediate, urgent attention’† said Anne Petersen, a professor at the Center of Human Growth and Development at the U niversity of Michigan who chaired the research committee for the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council of the National Academies (Virginian). Neglecting children is the worst form of child abuse there is because it will affect their physical and mental health, their ability to control emotions, their performance in school, and their relationships with their parents, children, and other adults all of this will hurt them continuously throughout their entire life. Neglect comes from when children are not given the attention they need by their parents. Whether it is a single parent home or a double parent home there can still be a large amount of economic stress either one parent doesn’t have a job and the other has a low paying job or maybe both parents go laid off because of the terrible economy which will lead to even more neglect (Gittins). Parents worry about bills so if they have a job they try to get more hours in order to make rent or to buy groceries which is not a bad thing until the parent starts working so much that they forget about their child at home alone.
